A Meaningful Hoboken Family Photoshoot Before College

Some family photography sessions are about more than creating beautiful pictures. They preserve a chapter of life before everything begins to change.

I have photographed this wonderful family of five every year for the past 12 years. I have watched the children grow, personalities develop, and family relationships evolve in front of my camera. Each year, we create new photographs while continuing a tradition that has become incredibly meaningful to all of us.

This year’s session felt especially important. One of their children will soon be leaving for college, making this one of the final family photoshoots before their everyday life begins to look a little different.

College is an exciting new beginning, but it also brings a bittersweet transition for parents and siblings. That is why this year was the perfect time to document the five of them together in a place filled with character, movement, and beautiful New York City views: Hoboken, New Jersey.

Court Street in Hoboken

Beginning on Historic Court Street

We started the family session on Court Street, one of Hoboken’s most distinctive hidden gems.

With its cobblestones, historic buildings, textured walls, and old-city atmosphere, Court Street gives family photographs a timeless quality. It feels intimate and tucked away from the busier parts of town, allowing everyone to relax naturally at the beginning of the session.

This location was perfect for capturing the family walking together, sharing a few laughs, and easing into the experience. After photographing them for so many years, our sessions feel less like formal appointments and more like catching up with old friends.

The familiar connection between the five of them came through immediately.

Natural Family Photos at Pier C Park

From Court Street, we made our way toward Pier C Park.

Pier C is a wonderful location for a Hoboken family photoshoot because it offers greenery, open space, waterfront views, and plenty of opportunities for candid moments. Rather than keeping everyone in formal poses, I encouraged the family to walk, talk, and enjoy being together.

These in-between moments often become the most meaningful photographs: a sibling making everyone laugh, a parent looking proudly at a child, or the entire family naturally falling into step beside one another.

The best family photographs do more than show what everyone looked like. They remind you how it felt to be together at that particular moment in your lives.

Walking Along Sinatra Drive

We continued along Sinatra Drive, one of Hoboken’s most scenic waterfront locations.

With the Manhattan skyline across the Hudson River, the waterfront creates a beautiful contrast between an urban setting and relaxed family connection. Sinatra Drive also gives a session variety without requiring the family to travel between distant locations.

As we walked, we created a mixture of portraits and candid images. Some photographs included the full family, while others focused on the parents, siblings, and individual children. Since one child will soon be leaving for college, it felt especially important to document all of these relationships.

The skyline may provide a spectacular backdrop, but the family’s connection remains the heart of every image.

Views at Pier A Park

Our next stop was Pier A Park, one of the most popular family photography locations in Hoboken—and for good reason.

The park offers wide lawns, mature trees, open sky, and panoramic views of New York City. Near sunset, the light becomes soft and warm, creating flattering portraits with a beautiful glow.

Pier A Park also gives families space to move. Children and teenagers can be themselves, parents can relax, and the session feels more like an evening together than a formal photoshoot.

For this family, the open waterfront setting reflected the significance of the year ahead. Their child is preparing to step into a new season of independence, while the family is holding onto the closeness they have built over the years.

Ending at the Historic Hoboken Train Station

We ended our session at the historic Hoboken Terminal.

The old train station was a fitting final location—not only because of its beautiful architecture, but also because of what it represents. Train stations are places of arrivals, departures, and new journeys.

With college approaching, that symbolism felt particularly meaningful.

The terminal’s historic details, dramatic structure, and warm interior light gave us a final collection of portraits that felt classic and emotional. After beginning among the cobblestones of Court Street and traveling along the waterfront, we finished at a place connected to movement and new beginnings.

It was the perfect ending to a session celebrating both the family’s history and the changes ahead.

Why Schedule Family Photos Before College?

The months before a child leaves for college can become incredibly busy. Between applications, graduation activities, celebrations, and preparations, scheduling family photographs may be easy to postpone.

But this is exactly the season worth preserving.

A family photoshoot before college documents your family as it is right now—before routines shift, bedrooms become quieter, and visits home replace everyday moments together. These photographs become a reminder of the connection that remains, even as children grow and begin creating lives of their own.

For this family, the session also continued a tradition spanning 12 years. Looking back through their photographs tells the story of childhood, adolescence, sibling relationships, and parenthood. This year’s images will become another important chapter in that visual history.
